Námslán og COVID-19 // Student Loans and COVID-19

Nú í byrjun janúar ættu þau sem sóttu um námslán fyrir haustið 2020 að fá lánin sín útborguð. Við útborgun kemur í ljós hvort stúdent fá greitt miðað við lánsætlun eða hvort lánið skerðist vegna skorts á námsframvindu.
Stúdentar hafa átt erfiða síðustu mánuði, eins og við flest, en samkvæmt könnun Stúdentaráðs Háskóla Íslands í október sögðu 73% stúdenta að álagið sem fylgt hefur faraldrinum hafi haft neikvæð áhrif námsframvindu.
Nái stúdent ekki að klára allar þær einingar sem þau ætluðu sér væri það mjög skiljanlegt í ljósi aðstæðna en þau þurfa ekki endilega að hafa verið sjálf veik til að hafa orðið fyrir áhrifum faraldurins. Þau kunna að hafa misst vinnuna, þurft að vinna meira en þau ætluðu sér í lykilstarfi, þurft að sinna börnum sem voru í skertri skólavist, þurft að sinna fjarnámi í námi sem var ekki til þess hannað. Af þessum eða öðrum aðstæðum verið að glíma við andleg veikindi, hvað þá þau sem búa við undirliggjandi sjúkdóma og hafa þurft að einangra sig algjörlega.
Menntasjóður námsmanna birtu eftirfarandi upplýsingar í desember um hvernig þau munu koma til móts við lántaka vegna COVID-19.
Ef námsmanni hefur ekki tekist að sinna námi sínu vegna röskunar á hefðbundnu skólastarfi vegna kórónuveirunnar getur nemandi skilað inn staðfestingu skóla á ástundun sinni og óskað í kjölfarið eftir því að fá greitt í samræmi við lánsáætlun sína fyrir önnina.
Ef skipulag skóla breytist og námskeið færast á milli anna og/eða skólaára getur nemandi óskað eftir því að tekið verði tillit til þess við mat á námsárangri.
Ef námsmaður veikist af veirunni og getur ekki sótt skóla eða þreytt próf getur hann óskað eftir að tillit verði tekið til þess við útborgun námsláns.
Við teljum mjög mikilvægt að stúdentar viti af úrræðum sem þeim bjóðast af Menntasjóðnum og vonum innilega að þau þjóni sínum tilgangi. Við hvetjum háskólana til að sýna stúdentum skilning og veita þau vottorð sem þau þurfa til þess fá lánin sín greidd.

Now, at the beginning of January, those who applied for student loans for the fall semester of 2020 should be getting their loans paid out. Upon disbursement, it becomes clear whether the student will be paid based on their loan schedule or whether the loan will be reduced due to a lack of academic progress.
Students have had a difficult past few months, as most everyone has, but according to a survey by the Student Council of the University of Iceland in October, 73% of students said that the stress that has accompanied the pandemic has had a negative effect on their academic progress.
If a student does not manage to complete all the credits they intended, it would be very understandable in light of the circumstances, as they do not necessarily have to have been ill themselves to have been affected by the pandemic. They may have lost their jobs, had to work more than they intended to, especially as frontline workers, had to take care of children who were in reduced schooling, had to study online in a class that was not designed to be online, could be struggling with mental illness, let alone those who live with underlying illnesses and have had to isolate themselves completely.
The Student Loan Fund published the following information in December on how it will meet the needs of COVID-19 borrowers:
If a student has not been able to complete their studies due to a disruption of traditional school work due to the corona virus, the student can submit a school confirmation of their attendence and subsequently request payment in accordance with their loan plan for the semester.
If the organization of the school changes and courses move between semesters and / or school years, the student may request that this be taken into account when assessing academic achievement.
If a student becomes ill with the virus and is unable to attend school or take an exam, they can request that this be taken into account when paying out their student loan.
We consider it very important that students are aware of the resources offered to them by the Student Loan Fund and sincerely hope that they serve their purpose. We encourage universities to show students understanding and provide the certificates they need to get their loans paid out.
