Rektorar styðja kröfu stúdenta // Rectors support the demand of students

Samstarfsnefnd háskólastigsins, sem samanstendur af öllum rektorum Íslands, styður erindi LÍS um rýmri rétt stúdenta til atvinnuleysisbóta. LÍS árétta kröfu sína um að tryggja þurfi stúdentum rétt til atvinnuleysisbóta yfir sumartímann og senda ákall til stjórnvalda um að grípa þurfi til viðeigandi aðgerða svo að fjárhagsöryggi stúdenta sé í raun tryggt. 

Samtökin minna á að ef stúdent verður af atvinnu yfir sumartímann getur hann orðið fyrir verulegum tekjumissi. Þar sem stúdentar eiga almennt ekki rétt á atvinnuleysisbótum og Lánasjóður íslenskra námsmanna lánar stúdentum ekki fyrir framfærslu yfir sumartímann standa þeim engar bjargir til boða sem geta mætt þessum tekjumissi.

Forsætisráðherra vakti athygli á kröfu stúdenta á samfélagsmiðlum sínum þann 30. mars 2020 og tók undir að mikilvægt væri að bregðast við stöðunni. Vísaði ráðherra í tillögu fjárlaganefndar um að setja 100 milljónir í Nýsköpunarsjóð námsmanna til þess að búa til störf í sumar. Að mati ráðherra væri það það besta sem hægt væri að gera í núverandi stöðu. 

Að efla Nýsköpunarsjóð námsmanna er eitt og sér fagnaðarefni, hins vegar bendum við á að frekari aðgerða er þörf. Samtökin gera ráð fyrir að opnað yrði fyrir umsóknarfrest á ný í sjóðinn ef aðgerðin á að koma að gagni í sumar en þrátt fyrir það myndi takmarkaður fjöldi stúdenta geta nýtt sér þetta. LÍS leggja enn á ný ríka áherslu á kröfu stúdenta um að stúdentum verði tryggður réttur til atvinnuleysisbóta.

All the rectors of Iceland have declared their support for the demand of students regarding increased right to unemployment benefits. LÍS iterates the demand that students need to be ensured the right for unemployment benefits over the summer period and calls upon the government to take the actions needed to ensure that students' financial security is guaranteed.

LÍS reminds readers that if a student becomes unemployed during the summer then the substantial loss of income will be great. As a student, you generally do not have the right to unemployment benefits and the Icelandic Student Loan Fund does not allow students to be eligible for loans during the summer. Therefore, students have no resources available to meet this loss of income.

The Prime Minister drew attention to the demand of students on her social media on March 30th, 2020 and stressed the importance of responding to the situation. The Minister referred to the Budget Committee's proposal to add 100 million krónas to the Student Innovation Fund to create jobs this summer. In the Minister's opinion, this might be the best thing to do considering the situation. Enhancing the Student Innovation Fund is a reason for joy, however, LÍS points out that further action is needed. The Union expects that the fund will re-open the application process for this year if the action is to be of use this summer, but even so, a limited number of students would benefit from it. LÍS re-emphasises that students should be ensured the right to unemployment benefits.
