Stúdentar fá atvinnuleysistryggingar // Students get unemployment benefits

Stúdentar eru nú teknir með í reikninginn í aðgerðum ríkisstjórnarinnar sem miða að því að lágmarka áhrif COVID-19 á hagkerfið. Stúdentar munu því tímabundið eiga rétt á atvinnuleysistryggingum vegna skerts starfshlutfalls eins og aðrir samfélagsþegnar, ef þeir halda að lágmarki 25% starfshlutfalli.
Frumvarpið var áður útilokandi fyrir stúdenta en þeir eiga almennt ekki rétt á atvinnuleysisbótum. LÍS skrifuðu umsögn um frumvarpið þar sem þess var óskað að stúdentar væru teknir með í reikninginn og fundaði varaforseti LÍS með velferðarnefnd Alþingis vegna þess. Nefndin brást við óskum stúdenta og var frumvarpinu breytt í takt við óskir LÍS. Sjá nánar nefndarálit 2. umræðu á Alþingi hér.
Nú eiga stúdentar rétt á umræddum bótum eins og önnur en einnig hefur krafa um starfshlutfall verið rýmkuð verulega.
LÍS þakka velferðarnefnd kærlega fyrir samstarfið og fyrir það að bregðast svo skjótt við kröfum stúdenta. Þessar breytingar munu væntanlega hafa áhrif á fjölda stúdenta á landsvísu.

Students are now taken into account in government actions aimed at minimizing the impact of COVID-19 on the economy. Students will be temporarily entitled to unemployment benefits due to reduced employment rate, like other members of the community, if they hold a minimum 25% employment ratio.
The bill previously excluded students, but they are generally not entitled to unemployment benefits. LÍS commented on the bill requesting that students be included in the bill. LÍS's Vice-President met with the Welfare Committee of Parliament to further discuss the demands of students. The committee responded to our requests and the bill was amended in line with LÍS's wishes.
Students are now entitled to the benefits in question as others, but the requirement for a mininum percentage of work has also been significantly reduced in the bill.
LÍS would like to thank the Welfare Committee for their cooperation and for responding promptly to student demands. These changes are likely to affect number of students nationwide.
